Creating Compact Layouts

Compact Layouts in Salesforce determine which fields appear in the highlight panel at the top of a record page in Lightning Experience and Salesforce mobile. Editing these layouts helps users see the most important information at a glance.

In this article you will learn how to create new compact layouts for your objects. Please keep in mind that this can only be done by the system administrator.

1. Navigate to Object Manager

  1. Click the Gear icon (⚙️) > Setup

  2. In the Quick Find box, type Object Manager

  3. Select the object you want to edit (e.g., Contact, Opportunity)

2. Go to Compact Layouts

  1. In the object's left-hand sidebar, click Compact Layouts

  2. You’ll see a list of existing layouts

3. Edit or Create a Layout

  • To edit: Click the label of an existing layout, then click Edit

  • To create new: Click New, give it a name, and click Save

4. Choose Fields to Display

  • Select up to 10 fields

  • Use the Add and Remove arrows to manage field selection

  • Topmost field appears in bold at the top of the highlight panel

5. Save the Layout

6. Assign the Compact Layout

  • Back in the Compact Layouts section, click Compact Layout Assignment

  • Click Edit Assignment

  • Choose the layout to apply as the Primary for each record type

  • Click Save
